~Audi alteram partem~

You know your part of the story. Now hear the other side.
Cos everyone just want to be heard

You don't know me, cos you only choose to see a version of me. That's why it surprises you too much when you finally discover who I really am.

A lot of time, we feel betrayed by the people we "trust" and more often than not, our first reaction would be 'I don't know you're that kind of person'. The second reaction, which is not all that rare, would be the more appropriate 'I don't know who you are!

The second reaction is much truer. This is because -most of the time- when we "get to know" someone, we don't actually see the person as who he really is. As a creature with strong imaginations, we see people the way we want to see them. This gets worse we're "in love" with someone (and so much worse when 'we' are girls). The colours of love sure are more bright and saturated. This is why there are a lot of nice people end up with people who don't deserve them.
It's easier to love an imagination...

It's not always a bad thing though, mistaken someone for who he isn't. There scenarios go both ways. There'll be a time when you think someone is not bad person, but she turns out to be a "tragically misunderstood character". When you thought someone is lazy, but really she's just suffering a ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and turns out to work great when she works alone. When you thought someone is weak and timid, and she's really just being polite and has been feeding your ego. And there'd be time when one day she decides she has enough and shows that she's actually strong and independent (and decides to flip you one).

In either case, it's always good to be honest to yourself, don't lie to yourself. As Syrio Forel wisely said, "See with your eyes." Don't see with your judgement or imagination. See things and people for what they really are. And when you've seen, don't be angry or bitter, just accept it and move on. People are not here to make your life miserable (you're not that important), they simply are.

Sickening humanity

Abraham Lincoln quote

People earn what they earn.

Many people complain they don't have the life they want. But when asked what exactly they want, they don't know.
When asked to work on what they want, they don't want to.
When shown the great people who actually work for to build a dream, they laugh.
They sneer, they grab a feet, throw fires.

People forget, great things might fall so quick but they weren't built overnight.

A smiling face An empty heart A back turned and a tear A motion without emotion

A journey of a thousand miles..

Asking my boyfriend any my brother "What do you think if I move to Australia to work?": The difference.

Me:  "What do you think if I move to Australia to work?"
Bf: *shrug* "Ok."

Me: "What do you think if I move to Australia to work?"
Bro: "What's the job? Who told you? Are you sure? What did your bf say? Have you thought it through? Don't you think this is selfish?" *two hours later* "The economy is... The tax in Australia is..." *two more hours later* "You have to know what you want in life. Is this really what you want? If not, then what is it that your really want." *goes on to other irrelevant topics for a few hours more*

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the difference between an optimistic idealist and pessimistic realist.

An optimistic idealist sees the world like a little child. Just enjoy what you're doing and life will shape itself around you. No need to worry. Worries only brings unhappiness, and unhappiness brings bad luck.

While a pessimistic realist is the total opposite --perhaps like a bitter old man. Everything that will go wrong in life, will go wrong. It is life's personal mission to make each individual's life miserable.

I'm not saying that one is better than the other. Any extreme is not good. What we can do is learn from both and find our own balance.

But right now, my journey of a thousand miles is stuck on the first step.

Land of Oz

Every once in a while, I come up with a crazy idea.
One that would make my friends sure I'm a crazy dreamer.

Maybe that's why I don't have many friends.. hmm.. *distracted, thinking about the past*
Well, it's ok, the friends that I still have don't really mind my crazy dreams.

Most of my dreams didn't come true, of course, as I just leave them as they are: a dream. But now I'm dreaming a new dream and I can't sleep at night cos I literally dream it in my sleep. And I just have to do it, no matter what. Especially since my last job interviewer went MIA.

My latest crazy dream is *drum rolls pls* move to Australia and work there.

The first common reaction I got was, "Why so sudden?"
Sudden for other people is because I announce it suddenly. But I've been thinking about it for months, and kept the idea at the back of my head for years.

Bukan hanya cantik yang subjektif. 'Kenapa' dan 'karena' juga.

The second common reaction I got was, "Why?"
That interrogative word again. To that question I always answer "Why not?" But of course that simple rebuttal is never enough to stop people from asking. One 'why' is enough to confuse philosophers. A why answered with a why is like poking a sleeping dragon. So to soothe the dragon back to sleep again, I chant the obvious facts: Australia has higher demand of human resource and offers higher salary (compared to Singapore and Indonesia).

But the real reason to that question, I only told one person so far. This blog is the second place I repeat it: To give my life a purpose.

Hidup itu harus ada yang mau dicapai...

We have to have a goal in life. Only by having something to achieve can we have an achievement.
By staying where I am right now, I can't achieve anything. I don't have a purpose. I've lost interest (and hope) in my previous dream. While just dreaming this new dream, I have the enthusiasm to wake up in the morning.

Now, I have to risk everything I have (which is not much anyway) to keep moving forward. So that even though this dream falls through, at least I tried.

Buying happiness

Yes, you can buy happiness.
You just need to know what to buy: People.

Ok, not exactly. According to this book 'The Geography of Bliss', by Eric Weiner (that's 'e' before 'i', ok) because human is a party, eh, social animal (rawr), happiness is about being with other people. So, one way to be happy is to spend your money on other people. Be it to buy something for a stranger, friends, or family, when your money help to make other people happy, you'll be happier too.

So..um, can I borrow $20?

How to be happy - Eric Weiner

Keep asking questions

"Another reason why it is important to keep asking questions even thought there are no clear answers, is in order to remind ourselves of our ignorance. Science is built not only on knowledge. It is also built on ignorance. It is very, very important to always remember what we don't know."

- Dr. Yuval Noah Harari,
History Professor in Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Think your country sucks?

Think again.

As if it's not enough listening to heartbreaks from Syria, Egypt, and many other war-torn countries, internet once again show me that sufferings come in many form. This time, in the form of a drug called the Devil's Breath from Locombia, I mean, Colombia.
"Do you know why they call it Devil's Breath? Cos it steals your soul."
- Luis Eduardo, victim.

For those who aren't sure which one is Colombia,
it's the one connected to Panama like a fetus.
The locals call it burundanga. For English speakers who can't pronounce it, it's also called Scopolamine.

Odourless, colourless, and tasteless, it can be blown to victim's face without him even knowing he's been drugged. Worse than that, its effect resemble something that come out of Harry Potter world: Victim will be 100% conscious, but without any willpower nor memory. You know when you remember you have $10 in your wallet, but now can't find it and don't remember that you spent it? Well, it's like that, except it's your whole bank account. One of the victims who thought they're being robbed, and reported to the police, were actually shown a video that he himself withdrew all the money and gave it to some strangers. I shudder at the thought of other things bad people can do with this substance.

Worst of all, the plant Borrachero from which this drug can be produced grow freely everywhere in Colombia. The flower is beautiful and the tree looks like any other tree, but one can actually pick any parts of the plant, dip it into hot water and get high from drinking it. It's not so bad, isn't it? Cos weed does the same thing? Well, except you can't get overdose with weed. One single seed of the plant (which is not bigger than 1 cm) can produce 70 mm of Scopolamine, when 1 gram (that'd be 15 seeds) of it can kill 10 to 15 people.

Colombia by itself is a crazy country. Murder, drugs dealing, and prostitution are merely some of the occupations in the country. But, imagine all that with a sprinkle of Scopolamine.
Flashfloods don't sound so bad anymore, eh, Singapore? We choose expensive fuels anytime over this, eh, Indonesia?

If you're interested to know more, here's a thorough 35-minute documentary about the drug and its victims:

Of course, as it is with everything else, it can be used for good things as well. I hope in the near future the higher minds will use the properties of the drug for medical purposes instead, or for anything else mediocre minds like mine can't think of. No, please not euthanasia. Maybe to tame big cats (cheetah as pet, anyone?), or to cure spacesickness as NASA is planning to do.

Bidadari Pagi / Dewi Malam

Bidadari Pagi/Dewi Malam
Puisi dan lagu dari film 'Jomblo'.
A poem and a song from the Indonesian movie 'Jomblo'.

Bidadari Pagi

Engkau bidadari pagi
Engkau ratu di hari Rabu
Engkau adalah embun yang hendak melahirkan…
dan menetes di saat mentari bersemi
Engkau adalah sepi yang datang…
diantara petir badai menderu
Engkau adalah sejuk ….
yang angin bawa di februari
Engkau adalah sinar yang mentari
lahirkan setelah fajar pergi
Engkau adalah tangis yang ku bawa
ketika membayangkan kita berdua
Engkau adalah…
Engkau adalah alasan….
mengapa duniaku….ADA

Dewi Malam

Dewi malam ku pinta
Seorang wanita pada pasir
Dengan butirnya
Wajahmu terukir
Pergi menghamba jawab
Pada air di dalamnya
Ku rasa hangatmu mengalir
Kau datang dengan angin tak terasa
Kau datang menghembus membelai muka
Kupinta pintamu tuk beri nama
Dengar mereka sebut namamu

Dewi malamku, Dewi malamku

Mengasihimu dan menyayangimu
Aku rela pergi jauh tuk itu
Aku mencintaimu dan memilikimu
Aku rela mati rasakan itu semua
Rasakan itu semua

Oost Indië

As an Indonesian, I know that many of the Indonesian words came from other languages. Sanskrit, Arabic, and the more modern English. And one that should not come as a surprise: Dutch. We were after all colonised for more than 3 decades by the Netherlanders.

However, it's still surprised me whenever I find out that a word is actually from Dutch.

Here are some of them that I find very interesting that they're actually not originally Indonesian (for the full list, drop by Wikipedia instead):

Original word
Baskom Washbasin Waskom
Beha Brassiere Beha
Bioskop Cinema Bioscoop
Dasi Necktie Das(je)
Ember Bucket Emmer
Handuk Towel Handdoek
Kaisar Emperor Kaizer
Kamar Room Kamer
Kantor Office Kantoor
Kulkas Fridge Koelkast
Laci Deskdrawer Laatje; La(de)
Mantel Coat Mantel
Montir Mechanic Monteur
Om Uncle Oom
Oma Grandma Oma
Opa Grandpa Opa
Pabrik Factory Fabriek
Rekening Account Rekening
Resleting Zipper Ritssluiting
Rokok Ciggarette Roken (to smoke)
Selang Water hose Slang
Suster Nun/nurse Zuster
Tas Bag Tas
Telat Late Te laat (too late)
Wastafel Sink Wastafel
Wortel Carrot Wortel

The one that amuses me specifically is "te laat". But now that I know the original word, it actually makes more sense.

Do you?

Yoda-Anakin Skywalker respect
When two persons you respect disrespecting each other,
do you stop respecting either one?
After I let the thought brew for a few days, it seems to me that you can't help it: You will (involuntarily) stop respecting one of them because there will be one of them that you respect more.

They don't even have to disrespect each other; the doubt can come even when only one of them dislike the other one. In this case, I think you would start disrespecting the person who shows dislike the first.
For example, we respect both Yoda and Anakin, but when Anakin start disrespecting Yoda, of course the natural thing that would happen is we lose our respect to Anakin.
That is just a gist, the fact is definitely a lot more complicated than that.

Do you believe in sixth sense?

I don't know how's bread toaster in everyone else's home, but my toaster is the kind that has open top. I was on my way home after buying some bread, and I thought, "I really should put some lid on my toaster; it's so gross with the dust and all."

True enough, when I reached my place, put the bread in the toaster and press on... the thing I fear more that cockroach and death -a baby gecko- jumped out at me. Well, it TRIED to jump out. But he's unlucky, and I'm unlucky. So now there's a small half-toasted gecko in my toaster.
(So, sixth sense is no good when it's too late.)

For anyone who wants a free toaster, you're welcome to contact me.

One of my best friends has been encouraging me (and a few others) to take up Forex trading. When we show reluctance, he gave us an inspiring 'speech'. I was so touched I decided to share it with everyone.

Anyway just to tell you guys why I started trading, I have a few goals.
Financial freedom, for one. I don't want to keep relying on the mercy of a company to earn money. Why trading? Because it's a solitary effort. You don't get burdened by politics or interaction with people or any external factors that usually hinders people in their career/business. You deal with money, not service or business. Other than initial capital, the only other thing you need to master is yourself. Nothing else. So it's very attractive to me.

Other goals of mine would be to be able to teach it to others. This world is a cruel world, where you need to excel academically in order to have an easier life. What about people who are too late? Or people who are handicapped? Trading resets all that to an equal standing ground whereby it does not matter who you are or what is your qualification. As long as you are determined, your account will speak for it. If I can teach this life skill to others and they can earn through trading, I consider it a good thing. It's sorta a second chance for everyone, at least that's how I view it. No matter if you went to prison before, or your grades were horrible, as long as you persevere, trading won't discriminate you.
Now you all know what drives me to learn this trading bizniz haha..
The feeling worse than seeing your archenemy living her dream is probably seeing her living your dream.

I don't remember how to spell archenemy doesn't mean I don't remember hating you.

"Oh" is one of the most versatile words in human language.

When you're too shocked to say anything.
When you're moved by a touching story.
When you don't care enough to say anything else.
When you have nothing nice to say.
When 'ok' is not short enough.
"Oh" comes in just fine.

Doctor Love

The quest of understanding women has been going on forever after. But it still surprise me to find out about Doc Love, who apparently has a whole talk show and website dedicated to teach men 'womanese'. He's selling a book at $99 on The System of the Venus and even coined the term 'women's interest levels' in relationships.

I read a few of his articles in askmen.com and I think the man knows what he's talking about. Mostly, though, I'm more touched knowing men spend so much effort and money to understand women.

But here's a real advice by the mallard duck, that I agree on:
Understanding women

I understand myself and know the games I play and I hate myself sometimes. But let's not go there. I just want to say that when it's about making your female counterpart happy, it's really not that complicated.

Simple (and free) ways to be a perfect boyfriend:

  1. Hold her hands, especially when crossing the road.
Really, you're going to leave her on the other side of the road when the cars start speeding by?
  2. Offer to pay.
It's tapping on the ancient note that guys provide. Most nice girls will still insist on splitting the bills, but even if she doesn't, so what? It's a cheap price to pay for her love, no?
  3. Tell her jokes.
It subconsciously means 2 things: You want her to laugh, to be happy; and that she's special in your eyes cos you tell the joke to her, not anyone else.
  4. Always, always let her walk in front of you.
It's being respectful and protective at the same time. All the wins for you.
  5. Compliment her at random times.
  6. This works both ways. You'd love it too when your gf compliment you, right? So give her that happiness. God forbids somebody says the compliment first at obvious time, like when she wears a beautiful dress or shoes.
If all else fail, just buy her expensive gifts. It does the trick most of the time.

Sure, Doc Love is not really about making your girlfriend happy, but also about getting the girl you want to notice you. Maybe it's slightly more complicated. I'll need to read The System first before I can comment further. Meanwhile, enjoy this favourite joke of mine (be sure to tell it to your gf!):

Genie's Highway
A man was walking along a California beach and stumbled upon an old lamp. He picked it up and rubbed it and out popped a genie. The genie said "OK. OK. You released me from the lamp, blah, blah, blah. This is the 4th time this month and I'm getting a little sick of these wishes so you can forget about three. You get one wish!"
The man sat and thought about it for a while and said, "I've always wanted to go to Hawaii, but I'm scared to fly and I get very seasick. Could you build me a bridge to Hawaii so I can drive over there to visit?"
The genie laughed and said, "That's impossible! Think of the logistics of that! How would the supports ever reach the bottom of the Pacific? Think of how much concrete...how much steel!! No, think of another wish!"
The man said OK and tried to think of a really good wish. Finally, he said, "I've been married and divorced four times. My wives always said that I don't care and that I'm insensitive. So, I wish that I could understand women...know how they feel inside and what they're thinking when they give me the silent treatment...know why they're crying, know what they really want when they say 'nothing'...know how to make them truly happy..."
There was a silence. And then the genie said, "You want that bridge with two lanes or four?"

30 Seconds to Mars - "City of Angels"

If I can just have one-tenth of his singing talent..

There was truth, there was consequence, against you.
A weak defense, then there's me.
I'm 17, and looking for a fight.
All my life, I was never there just a ghost, running scared.

Not loving their first hit of the latest album Up in the Air, this song might restore my love for 30 Seconds to Mars. I'm loving the acoustic version, still undecided about the original.

Pain and pleasure

A book and its cover

My Hush Puppies luggage has this glitch ever since I bought it last year: the handle sometimes won't go down all the way. It's stuck at medium height at random times, and so it's frustrating when I have to put the luggage in baggage or car trunk.
I've been meaning to bring it to the service centre, but as with most adults, I always loss my time doing I-have-no-idea-what.

Hush Puppies purple luggageFinally today my boredom reached its peak and I decided to drop by Hush Puppies main agent near Tai Seng MRT.
The complete address is:
Lohmun Leather Products Pte Ltd
153 Kampomg Ampat #03-04,
Jun Jie Industrial Building, S368326
Telp: 6282 8255

There's no easy way to reach there (except by taxi or personal vehicle, of course), I had to walk 15 minutes from MRT station. Even when I reached the building, I had to go through turns and trucks to reach the service centre.

But once I reached the building, everyone there was so helpful, it's almost comical. The security saw me dragging my luggage and immediately said, "Straight, to the left, take lift, 3rd floor." As I was walking to the lift, another person standing there said, "3rd floor number 4." When I reached 3rd floor, the lift opened up to another person and he said "Your left, to the corner." As if somebody knew I was coming and made the whole script for me. Just to piss-off my atheist readers, I would say it was God who planned the whole thing for me.

The service centre turned out to be not so much a centre, just a workshop. I expected to fill some forms, show my receipt etc etc. But I was only greeted by a technician with this stern looks about him. He merely said, "what happened?" I explained to him and he took my luggage, give it a few spins and a few drops of oil. And just like that the glitch is solved! Literally 5 minutes. He works so fast it's like watching an F1 technician at work.

Apparently there is nothing broken, the handle just needs some oil. I feel so embarrassed. I think it happens a lot to ignorant buyers. The technician merely said, "anything else?" while checking for other parts of the luggage. Amazed, I said "that is all". He then taught me how to do the oiling to my luggage and sent me off my way. I wasn't charged a single cent for all these. Such a nice guy! I want to take a moment to praise Hush Puppies customer service *slow clap*

Moral of the day:
Don't judge a book by its cover. It's not only talking about judging people from his looks, but also about addressing a problem. A problem might looks life-ending but the solution could be so simple. Or on the contrary, it may looks easy, but there might be invisible impacts to other aspects in your life.

The secret is, be honest to yourself. Like Steve Jobs said, your intuition somehow already know what's going on. Most of the time, it's our mind that wants a dramatic existence and  makes things worse than it really is.
In Syrio Forrell's words, see with your eyes. See things and people as they are. Is this an obnoxious person or just a nice person who's having a bad day? Is there really no solution to this problem or uncle Google can help you solve it? Don't let your feelings or memories or worries add cloudy filters to them. Otherwise, you'll end up wasting time and energy like I did.

Harry Potter Author's Dedication

JK Rowling always dedicated her books to certain people. Ever wonder who are the people whose names is written on the beginning of each book and why they get the honorary position?

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone

For Jessica, who loves stories, for Anne, who loved them too, and for Di, who heard this one first.

Jessica is JK's twelve-year-old daughter. Anne was JK's mother, who, unfortunately, died of Multiple Sclerosis on December 30th, 1990. Dianne, or Di, is JK's younger sister who she read Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone before Jo sent it off to be reviewed.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

For Sean P.F. Harris, getaway driver and foulweather friend.

JK met Sean at her secondary school, Wyedean, when she was eleven. "He was the first of my friends to learn to drive and that turquoise and white car meant FREEDOM and no more having to ask my father to give me lifts, which is the worst thing about living in the countryside when you are a teenager." JK said in her website, JKR.com. "Some of the happiest memories of my teenage years involve zooming off into the darkness in Sean's car. He was the first person with whom I really discussed my serious ambition to be a writer and he was also the only person who thought I was bound to be a success at it, which meant much more to me than I ever told him at the time."

Harry Potter and Prisoner of Azkaban

To Jill Prewett and Aine Kiely, the godmothers of Swing.

Jill Prewett and Aine Kiely were JK's flatmates when she lived in Portugal. They used to visit a club/restaurant called "Swing" regularly. Because they spent so much time there, Jo called themselves its godmothers.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

To Peter Rowling, in memory of Mr Ridley and to Susan Sladden, who helped Harry out of his cupboard.

Peter Rowling is JK's father. Mr Ridley refers to Ronald Ridley, an old family friend of the Rowlings. This man's name was the inspiration for Ron Weasley's name. Susan Sladden could be the Susan JK once referred to in an interview as the woman who used to look after Jessica (JK's daughter) while she worked on the Harry Potter books.

Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix

To Neil, Jessica and David, who make my world magical.

Dr. Neil Murray is Jk's husband. Jessica, her daughter. And David, her son.

Harry Potter and Half-Blood Prince

To Mackenzie, my beautiful daughter, I dedicate her ink and paper twin.

Mackenzie Jean Rowling Murray, JK's third child, was born on January 23rd, 2005. Mackenzie and Book 6 were being "made" (developed/written) around the same time, and were both finished (born/published) almost simultaneously, hence Mackenzie's "ink and paper twin".

Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows

The dedication of this book is split seven ways: to Neil, to Jessica, to David, to Kenzie, to Di, to Anne, and to you, if you have stuck with Harry until the very end.

The "seven-way split" refers to some of those with whom JK has shared her life while writing Harry; Dr. Neil Murray is JK's husband; Jessica, David, and Mackenzie are her children; Di is JK's younger sister, Dianne/Anne is JK's mother who died at 45 of MS (although JK's mother did not know of the books since she died early on, JK has said her death had a profound influence on how the series was written), and the final dedication is to all the fans who have made Harry's journey their own.

Understanding understand

The difference between hearing and listening; between watching and seeing; between experiencing and learning; is the understanding.

I've been feeling angry (again) lately. About the things I cannot have and I cannot have. Understand? Things I don't have the capability to have and things I am not allowed to have.

There are things I want that I can't get yet.
There are things I want I know I have the ability to have but somehow still don't have.
There are things I want that I know I will never have.
There are things I chose not to have but I want it now.

My brother said, wisdom is when you understand. And when you understand, you're wise, you won't be angry. So you have to learn to understand what you don't understand yet.
But how do you know you don't know what you don't know?
Do we even understand the word 'understand'?
Confuse yet? Well, let it sinks. UNDERSTAND IT.

All the angers rooted from wants; is that even healthy? Perhaps I should just go and live like the Kalahari bushmen. Seems peaceful enough.

In another note..

First, God is both able and willing, it's people's stupidity that's always gets in the way.
Second, atheists are supposed to not believe in God, so why are we discussing this? Atheists, please understand yourselves. Decide, whether you're an atheist or an agnostic?

Modern Myth

Myth are public dreams. Dreams are private myths. Joseph Campbell.

The first time is the floodgate.
People's inability to answer simple questions is amazing.
Especially when it comes to what they want.

The price of life

Everything comes with a price. The only important question is, are you willing to pay?
It's not a dream when you are not ready to die for it.
It's so sad that most girls these days think engagement is only about a diamond ring.
